A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Review

I’ve owned this book for a few years now and I just finally got around to reading it.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is actually a collection of 3 short novellas that revolve around a duo of characters that exists in the Game of Thrones universe.  In fact, these stories take place roughly 100 years before the events of A Game of Thrones.    These stories follow a hedge knight name named “Dunk” and his faithful squire “Egg”.   It is through these stories that the reader becomes more aware of life in Westeros during the reign of the Targaryens.

The stories open up by introducing the characters to one another and Dunk taking Egg on to be his squire.  The reader learns that Dunk himself was a formerly a squire of Ser Arlan of Pennytree and was knighted just prior to Arlan’s death.  Dunk proceeds to Ashford Meadow in hopes of participating in the tournament that will allow himself to upgrade his arms along with providing him the ability to further travel the lands.  As with most of George RR Martin novels, things don’t always go as planned for our hero, which is the case for Ser Duncan the Tall.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book. Having read all of the books in the Game of Thrones series, this was a nice addition to complement what I’ve already read.
